As it turns out, the wiring for my overdrive relay was completely incorrect. As pointed out by Jon Arzt (Rootes(at)aol.com) battery voltage is supposed to be coming into the relay from the OD switch on the tranny. Since the overdrive was working, it would appear that the DPO ran a line from the starter switch (inside the engine compartment) directly to the relay. The column overdrive switch was used simply as a direct off/on for the OD. I guess this explains why the contacts appear a bit burnt.
I've looked around and I can't seem to find the backup switch on the tranny, nor any location where such a switch could be connected. I guess I'll go without backup lights for now.
If all goes well, I should complete the safety inspection this week and I'll be back out on the road for the long weekend (in Canada)!
Happy motoring,
Louis
