Ring Bolt Tightening

Some weeks ago there was a thread about loose ring bolts in the diff. Since my car (S IV) is now sitting on stands with the drive shaft removed, it seems like an ideal opportunity to make a check. Can someone outline exactly what needs to be done to expose the ring gear to enable the bolts to be checked? Do the half shafts, for example, need to be withdrawn?

Any info would be extremely useful.
