Tom, I have done it with a few changes. Some of the later V's had more
splines on the gearbox shaft which means you have to use the clutch
assembly too. If you do that, the clutch is a smaller one and the bolt
pattern on the flywheel is different - I switched the flywheel too. If
you don't change the clutch and stay with the Series II clutch, make
sure there is clearance between the the back of the clutch housing and
the assembly that holds the throwout bearing and lever. I found I could
not get the bellhousing to mate up with the engine due to interference.
I think the throwout bearing housing on the Series II is not as
tall/high as the Series V .
It is a worthwhile project to do - and even better if you have an
overdrive. I drove a Series III on the weekend which was non-syncro
first and it brought it all back to me what a pain it is. If you have an
overdrive too, stay with the 3.89 rear end and the car is a dream on the
freeway. A real high speed cruiser
