You were asking recently on 1725 rebuild stuff, so if you have a usable 1725 and tranny, or can afford procuring them, I highly recommend you rebuild them. There is a lot to be said for the durability and longevity of properly maintained rootes engines.

Whatever your choice on the engine subject, I think it wise to keep the alpine burman box for the steering, otherwise, save some money, and just buy a tiger or an alger.

I really like the 2.0 ford, great aftermarket, and probably the easiest to fit in the alpine.

The 2.8 as has been said is a shoe in, but I'd hate to have to deal with the tight exhaust details, particularly since I am very fond of headers.

The 2.3 SVO turbo has been done by Dan Walters and Steve Alcala, which is reported to be every bit as quick as most tigers, without the mal handling charectoristics.

Once again, Richard Atherton has plans of using the Rover 3500 V8 engine, which in veiw of its size, sounds more sound then the 260 or 289 that went into the tigers. Seriously doubt that the alpine steering could be used for obvious reasons.

Lastly, the lotus 907/910/911 engine looks to be a great alpine addition, that we might even had seen in the early 70s, had both the series alpine continued production, and chrysler not gotten a brain tumor.
