It was for real. In about 1960 or 61 one of these cars was owned by a guy named Stewart. He owned Stewart's Photo on 4th Avenue in Anchorage. He drove the car up to the Yukon River and put it in [I think at Eagle, near the Alaska/Yukon border] or at Circle and sailed [motored? floated?] downstream. How far he went I don't know but this is for real, I recall the photo story in Life Magazine.
