I swiped this from a site about Austin Healey restoration. Seems like we're not the only LBC owners concerned with performance and reliability mods.

I have been using a Toyota Supra 5 speed in my BJ8 since early 1991.It is smooth with 5 usable gears and all synchromesh. It shifts sooooo easy and the 400 psi pump and the electroless overdrive are things of the past. Its a bolt in installation using all the Healey clutch parts with the exception of the clutch disk which is a Toyopta part. Smith Brody (aka Smitty) is manufacturing a kit which includes a cast bell housing, rear trans bracket, flywheel pilot bearing and other misc. stuff to make the conversion. You supply the Toyota tranny. His phone number is 805-495-1488. I have approximently 40,000 troublefree miles on my installation with two trips across the US. I still have the original trans under the bench but I'll never put it back in as long as I own the car. Ask Smith who has one in your local and drive it...If you like it, go for it..if not don't mess with it."
