The ones I have on my car are "D" shaped too.
My thinks it allows you so sort of keep the pins from rotating while you are tightening the locking nut on the backside into the plastic zone.
I still think the yet non-removed pin shall become an 8 beer affair. If you want to be a part of beers 1,3,5 and 7, give me a call.
