My personal and professional opinion is Type F trans fluid, as used by older Ford products. It may be a little harder to find than Dexron or Mercon, but it's still out there. I work for a SAAB dealer, and SAAB was one of the last holdouts using the old type 35 and 37 Borg Warner units. Their recommendation has stayed with Type F, so that's what I use in the B-W auto box in my Humber. The only other input I have, is that YEARS ago, when I worked in an auto parts store, I asked the Castrol representative to "translate" all the fluid recommendations in my Alpine manuals. His match to the specified fluid was Type F.
