The transmision portion of the OD is the toughest to come by, not the OD unit.
What is tough though is when you've gutted the internals of the OD and need anything relating to gears. This is mostly because if you need any gears, you really need all the gears, and the anulous "largest gear" is special only to an alpine.
I suspect that there is quite a bit more problem to your OD than you shop suspects though. For you NOT to be able to get any power through the OD, both the OD clutch and the overruning sprag clutch both must have fully failed. This is not very likley.
I would suspect a broken tailshaft on the OD or tranny.
Rebult ODs are available, but do cost a lot, and recently, people have been adding on OD's from Volvos, which are functionally identical minus the output shaft details.
Fear not, something can be done, but whatever it is, its probably not going to be cheap.
