This ran in a thread a good 3 or 4 years ago. I believe the general consensus was that this was a design feature by Rootes to keep cold air blowing on tired drivers to avoid any Alpines from being damaged in an accident. If I'm not mistaken, Dick Saunders had some really good explanations too.
