First a bit about myself:
I don't currently own an Alpine, but I hope to soon remedy the = situation. The first time I ever saw one was when I worked in a paint = store (as a high schooler) and one of our customers (a beautiful young = lady!) pulled up in a white Alpine. Well, I was stricken from that day. = Since then I've developed a soft spot for those lovely cars and would = like to find one to tinker with and drive in the sun.
A friend at work is a car buff (he just picked up a 59 MGA) and found an = ad to tempt me.
I went to look at the car and found: No visible rust, a fair-poor paint job (Maaco, with some brush strokes = on interior door panels!). Engine does not run, but claimed to be = rebuilt recently (Have to check the papers). Seller claims it is a bad = starter solenoid. Engine compartment looks clean. Some slight wrinkles = in the paint on two spots (didn't have a magnet). Extra hardtop = (stripped, some light surface oxidation). No battery.
On chassis plate: B395003187 LRX 39 (color?) also second plate SAL 605277 (not sure what this is)
I gather it is a Series V, but am not sure about much else. Oddly = enough, there was a small Chrysler emblem below the 1725 plate on the = right side of the car.
Anyhow, the questions:
How much would you think such a car is worth? I was thinking to start = at $2000US since the engine is an unknown
The car has been sitting for about a year. Any problems with getting a = new battery and trying to roll start it?
Any tips for looking over the car more carefully?
Is the hardtop rare?
Any other advice?
Just wanted to say thanks ahead of time. If it turns out the seller and = I cannot come to a consensus, I will provide the contact number so maybe = someone with deeper pockets can benefit.
thanks again, carlos
p.s. was there a rivalry between MGs and Sunbeams?
