I am busy scraping and sanding surface rusty areas, while doing a running restoration, and want to check some things before I go much further. Also, I am doing drudge work only with limited body tools (mainly scraping, wire-brushing and sanding to remove rust and loose paint, 2-coating with a product called "Extend" by Loctite, then using a surfacing filler compound called "Half-Time" (epoxy)(United Chemical + Plastics Inc.) which is similar to Bondo but never more than 1/8 " thick - sands in 15-20 minutes- and following with a coat of waterproof epoxy primer-filler. What I hope to do is most of the work I can do and leave as little as possible to be expensively done by experts later on (while still being able to leave the car out in the rain now and then without fear of wrecking what I have done). My ETA for a paint job is still at least a year away ( I hope to show up at SUNI III and park next to someone who wants to show a "Before" - my car - and "After" - his/her car - Series I)
I have several concerns which I hope some of you with body-work experience can answer. These are: 1) Does what I am doing sound adequate (or will it rust again or will it have to be re-done by a pro before painting)? 2) How many have succesfully repaired rust without cleaning to bare metal? 3) I keep hearing about POR 15 and have visited their website. Is it as good as they claim (because maybe I should be trying to get some of this)?
