All the Alpine D type OD trans rear seals I have seen (both early and late) are the same ones used on the early non-synchro trans Alpines. Sunbeam Specialties lists this as "TR-46" and the Chicago Rawhide # is 13552. The FM-National equivilent is #1987. I have an OD out of an Alpine GT ('69), and it uses the same seal. This was part of the Hunter range (badge engineered cars). The all-synchro, non-OD Alpine trans uses a larger rear seal (Chicage Rawhide #13865). Be sure the polished surface of the driveshaft yoke is very smooth, or you'll be replacing the seal again soon.

I can't remember if I've ever seen a gasket on the rear housing of the OD. If in doubt, why not use small amount of a high quality silicone sealer such as Permatex Ultra Copper to seal it before putting it together.

Some time ago, Doug Ferrell of the Midwest Sunbeam Club put together a 2 page listing of bearings and seals for Sunbeams. Doug worked in a bearing supply house at the time. The list is accurate, and has been a big help to me. Someone should post it on the web, but it would take some formatting to get it into HTML or Adobe Acrobat. If anyone is interested in doing this for all of us, I will be happy to supply a copy.

Good Luck,
