Hi Frank,
Assume you are looking at wires up behind the dash in the car, and not
at a harness removed from the car.
I have two harnesses hanging from my basement ceiling, one absolutely
original (from a S IV) and one pretty near original (from an S III).
Both are still wrapped with the factory blue tape. Both have only four
wires coming from the harness in the location you describe....two green,
one red with green, and one red with brown. As a matter of fact, there
are no other wires leaving the harness within 18 inches in either
direction.
All four of these wires connect to the wiper motor...the wires from the
motor are wrapped in the old cotton covering, and the colours fade a bit
but can usually be guessed correctly. Both green wires connect to the
pale green motor wire using one of those Lucas double connectors, the
red/green connects to the red motor wire, and the red/brown connects to
the brown motor wire.
Provided your car is a GT model, I think I can answer your question
about a fifth wire, since my S III (also a GT) has an extra wire in this
general area, but it doesn't come from the harness. The wire is purple
and YELLOW....I don't think there is a purple and white wire in the
wiring system of any Alpine...and is used to connect to the courtesy
light switch in the right hand door lower hinge....one of the hinge
securing screws has a funny projection from its centre which gets pushed
in when the door closes, or it should do if its working correctly...this
is the switch, and there should be a similar on on the left hand lower
door hinge. They operate the light above the windshield whenever one of
the doors is opened.....nice feature, and retro-fittable to non GT
models provided you can find the bits. The purple/yellow wire plugs into
the back of the screw switch, and can be accessed by removing the
screw...use a largish Phillips screw driver, gently push down the
projection with the screw driver until the head is properly engaged, and
unscrew the screw. The whole lot will come out the hole and you can see
the connection on the back. If there is no wire there, you will have to
run one into the hole and up and out behind the dash to connect to the
wire you have there. Note that there is no voltage on this wire, it is
merely a ground wire which makes a connection when the switch is closed
(door opened).
