This is sort of strange.
Ive never seen a rootes axle with a 1/4 inch filler, the norm
is a 3/8? NPT thread. This has about a 1/2 inch diam hole.

Is it possible that you dont have a rootes axle in your car?

The rootes axle has a 3rd member type diff setup, where
the gears and all come out the front of the case.
The alpine/rootes diff has no rear plate.
Most other cars, tigers included have a rear plate that
gives you access to the gear set.
