Old and New head Gaskets

I have a technical tidbit to share.

A few years back I did an overhaul of a 1725 engine.
I bought most of the bits from S.S., and some other bits from C.S.

Of the parts I got from S.S., the upper gasket set included a
head gasket that looked like none I'd ever used on an alpine
before. I called Rick and he said something like it was what
Peugeut was shipping to him now.

I have heard rumors that it was an NOS iron head gasket.
Used on the low compression engines, and possibly
the old Iranian 1725 engine.

This new gasket was white metal on both sides "zinc?"
and had the usual asbestos center.

As compared to the normal gasket which was copper on one
side and steel on the other, the sealing surfaces were wide
and flat, which to me looked like it would not put as much pressure
at the sealing areas, torque being the same.
The older gaskets are interlocked around the sealing
areas, which gives sort of a raised o-ring type sealing zone,
which to me looked superior to the flat wide sealing area
on the newer gasket.

I used the part skepticaly, and recently ran into a problem that
looks much like a blown head gasket. The head in question
was in exelent shape, and the engine is somewhat stock.

Before I pull the motor down, I was wondering if any others
of you might have used the same gasket, and if so, have you
had similar results.
