This could be the answer. The ends are slightly bowed out and the core
*almost* lifts straight through. Can I 'pop' the ends back into shape?
Or am I best to leave the core in place and just work around it?

I think my original post was misleading here. I tried to back out the
long studs but couldn't budge them. I have been squirting penetrating
oil onto the threads since I started this repair but they (the top two
at least) haven't budged. Oh well, at least I know the route to take
now. I was thinking of attacking the old housing with a grinder to cut
it free from the studs. I hope the DPO hasn't stuffed the threads into
the head and glued the studs or something....
Many thanks for all the advice.
Cheers,
Paul.
(luverly weather is here in Australia and my car is in bits! grrr)
