Lucas Ignition Warning Light

Listers,

My initial message about these warning lights has taken on
a life of its own! :) All responses were appreciated even if I could not
follow
some of the more complicated explanations. Read on if you want to know
how this little creature functions.

My set-up is very simple as one terminal for the warning light is
connected to the switched side of the ignition switch (power when the
ignition
switch is on) and the other terminal is attache to the "D" terminal of the
control box (voltage regulator) which is also where the generator output
lead is attached. The very light wire windings (about 30 or so) around the
bakelite base are in series with the light filament. The light only glows
when
the ignition is turned on or there is no output from the generator. This
means
that the ground connection for this lamp is through the generator windings
and ONLY when the generator is not working. When the generator IS working,
there would be the same negative voltage (zero potential difference) to both
light terminals (car is + ground) so there would be no current flowing
through
the bulb.

The ending to this tale is I found a good one in a parts car and I
now have a working ignition warning light. Thanks to all again. I have a
macro
digital image of one which I will send to anyone who is interested.

Regards,
Bob
