This is pretty much the last of the juicy bits I have found. I'm sure
plenty of you guys have old magazines around, and I would welcome other
posts.
In the June 1997 Motor Trend, they have an article called "24 Best Used Car
Buys" which "lists 24 used cars selected on the basis of purpose, size,
utility, low annual depreciation in time spans specified below, useful
mileage left, general economy and trouble-free operation -- not
necessarily in that order. We haven't considered prestige or other
intangibles." They have cars in the following categories: Large Family,
Small Family, Single Person, Commuter, Long-Distance Traveler and
Sports-Minded. For Sports-Minded is says "Annual mileage varies according
to its dual status with other categories. Perfomance ranks over economy,
flashy appearance over practicality. Tends to change every year or two,
but will hang on to a gem longer." And the winners are:
Over $2,000: 1964 Porsche 1600-C conv. cabr. $2,995. (note these are
worth in the $30,000 to $40,000 range now)
$1,500-$2,000: 1965 Sunbeam Alpine rdstr. $1,735 (no comment)
$850-$1,500: 1964 Datsun SPL-310 conv. $1,345 (is this a Fairlady/1600
car?)
Under $850: 1954 MG-TF rdstr $850 (note these are worth in the $20,000 to
$30,000 range now)
