Thanks to Don, the intrepid web surfer for unearthing these Sunbeam buys at
E-Bay auction. I was eagerly awaiting the release of the Johnny Lightning
Dr. No Alpine, so I checked out the ad at
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=42015880
Is it just my imagination, or is that a low-fin car in the blister pack?
The other ad for the same JL Alpine at
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=41933866 mentions
that the "top boot" is black. Only the S V and 1A and II Tigers had a black
top boot. The Dr. No car was a Series II high-fin Alpine with wire wheels,
and a metal (blue body color) top boot. Another ad by the later seller at
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=41685648 advertizes a
"Sunbeam Tiger Alpine" with the following discription:
"Johnny Lightning James Bond 007 series, 1/64 Sunbeam Alpine Tiger
convertible, Blue with Black interior. From the Movie Dr. NO, painted in the
correct color, has chrome 5 spoke wheels. Comes with collector film clip
card. Item is part of series 261-00, and is mint on mint card, never priced.
As with all of our Johnny Lightning auctions (check them out!) if final bid
price on this item exceeds 10.00, we will include another car from the
series (our choice) at no additional cost!! Winner pays 3.50 shipping in
USA. Combine winnings from other auctions to save on freight! Thank you and
good luck! Still shipping in time for the Holidays."
Just by adding the word "Tiger" to the ad, the bids were up to twice that of
the "Alpine" advertized car. We should have Norm Miller and the "Tiger
Police" check into this. In summary, although the models are advertized as
"Authentic Replicas of James Bond Vehicles" this model looks like a
warmed-over low-fin Tiger-Alpine repaint. It looks suspiciously like the
Micro Miniatures 1/64 Agent 89 Tiger released recently, which I bought in a
set for $3.50. For $10-$20 I think I'll pass on this un-authentic Johnny
Lightning car.
