The earliest known cam, designed by Leonardo da Vinci in 1494, was invented
for Vene Zia, the Duke of Milan, predecessor of Carriozia Superleggera Touring
Milano. Lacking the rest of the engine components Italian automotive progress
was set back 400 years. Da Vinci did not redesign it in 1592 because he was
then dead for 73 years.
