Gary, I got the steering unit out of the car and on the workbench. I
didn't have time last night to dismantle and start over with assembly
but I did notice that the upper and lower track bearings seem to be a
nice fit--not too loose , not too snug. My question is how would you
tell if the worm gear is worn? Is there a measurement that can be made ?
The "nut" that rides on it seems very loose (it flops around on the worm
where I would expect it to ride smoothly) and I did load it with new
bearings. When I spin the steering shaft the nut moves slightly before
it contacts the rocker shaft. My guess is that this is where the play
comes from and that if the worm was worn it would allow the nut to ride
too low for immediate contact with the rocker shaft.Does this make
sense? I will be taking it apart and starting over tonight but let me
know if you have any insight. Thanks.
