Paint Codes and VIN numbers

Rob's VIN issues seem as though they can be more clearly solved if we knew
what the tags looked like on the models.

I do not have my normal resources - I lent them to my brother in law now
that he has a Series II to maintain.

I do have my SIII tag here at work. It is the same as my SV tag, which is
similar to the Tiger tag shown on the inside cover page of the SS catelog.

My SIII tag is 1 1/8" by 3 1/2" and says
"WHEN ORDERING PARTS PLEASE QUOTE:
CHASSIS NO
& ENGINE NO
COLOUR
CODE

The numbers on my SIII tag are somewhat haphazardly hammered into the tag
from the top, with the GT, LRX and SB all sort of glommed together at the
end. The color code is close to the "COLOUR CODE" label. On my SV tag,
the numbers seemed to be pressed in from the bottom, on thinner metal, and
were far easier to read.

In the SS catelog, the show a "SI-II Spec Plate" which is a much larger
plate (maybe 3" by 4.5"?), with all sorts of details about the engine,
gearbox, rear axle, etc. It shows across the top part, two boxes, the long
one one the left is labelled "Chassis No. & Engine No." The small one,
just to the right of the Chassis one is labelled "Colour Code".

(BTW, the SS catelog also shows the French plate mentioned before. You may
want to call Rick to ask him what it means.)

So, that suggests that Rob should have this SI-II larger plate. If he does
not have the larger one, then is it safe assume that this a replacement tag
and there is no telling what the other number was meant to be? It almost
sounds like someone started stamping the chassis number, realized they made
a mistake and started all over again.

Rob, is there no where on the car - like under the door panels, or under
the convertable door covers, or in the trunk under the side panels, or the
color of the trunk springs, or behind that has the original color still on
it?
