Noted Theo's comment about removing tapered fittings. I have used his
method 2 for many years with great success, and have never yet needed to
get special tools. I place the flat of the largest hammer I have firmly
against one side of the taper housing, and strike the opposite side of
the housing with the largest hammer I can safely wield. I used this
method to replace the steering cross rod behind the engine of my S III
without removing the engine.
