The Pinto 1600 used by Ford for the first Pintos, was the wonderful English
Ford Cortina engine. It was developed into a real rip-snorter. Remember
pictures of Jim Clark racing a Lotus Cortina on three wheels and SCCA Formula
Ford? Same engine. Lots of dependable racing hop-up items are available. If
I had to choose an alternative engine to take the place of a Rootes 4cyl, I
might choose the Cortina (Pinto) 1600.
