I have been suffering from the black paint flaking off the inside of my gas
tanks. As a remedy, I got some Moss Gas tank Slushing Compound and went to
work.
Step 1 - Put rocks in tanks and shake until deaf
Step 2 - Look inside to make sure that loose paint is removed (I got about
50% of the paint off)
Step 3 - Lather, Rinse, Repeat
Step 4 - Tape off One hole in tank
Step 5 - Dump in 1 quart of Slushing Compound, coat inside of tank
Step 5 - Pour off all Excess compound leaving behind a very thin coating
Step 6 - Let dry
Interesting results from this:
Left side tank worked nicely. Right side tank - The paint crinkled under
the coating (ARGH!!!!) The slushing compound uses MEK as a solvent (Methyl
Ethyl Ketone). I repeated the steps listed above, only this time the
inside was infinitely more difficult to get to bare metal. Not much of the
coated crinkled paint came loose. I sure hope that the crinkled stuff
stays on as well under daily driving as it did when I beat it up with
rocks.
The moral of the story - Want to remove the paint from inside the gas tanks
but nothing seems to work? Try MEK mixed in with the rocks. (Shaken not
stirred)
