Tim,

If you saw a few paint jobs that this shop turns out and you like the results, well that
says a lot. After all, you need to be happy with the car.

Color sanding and buffing is an additional step that can be used to either smooth over
orange peel or dust which found it's way to the paint, or to offer the next step in finish
quality. It is not an essential step. A skilled painter in a quality paint booth ought
to be able to spray a finish which has a flatness & gloss comparable to a new car finish
without buffing. If you take a critical look at a new car finish there is a certain
amount of orange peel. The take a look at a really good paint finish - much flatter (ie:
no orange peel) and a deeper looking gloss. That look was probably achieved by color
sanding and buffing.

With a basecoat/clearcoat the clear coat is a harder finish (holds a shine better and
lasts longer) than the base, color coat. I have heard of people who mix some clear in
with the final color coat where they specificially did not want the deep gloss of a bc/cc
look on a 60's muscle car (because that was not the look that was original) but did want
the top coat to be more durable. Maybe that is what this shop is doing.

And I still remember Earl Sheib (sp?) saying "I'll paint ANY car for just twenty nine
ninty nine".
