I have seen ammeters fail several times before, and usually from operator-
error. If the gauge is designed to "see" 30 to 40 amps across it or its
shunt, and a careless person directly grounds the battery ("after" the gauge),
an incredible amount of current will pass thru the gauge until something in
the circuit fails or acts as a fuse: in some cases it is the ammeter, as they
are always wired in series with a circuit.
