You are right, no need to loosen the Ubolts. But, my straps were held in
place by 39 years of crud.
I ended up using a hammer and cold chisel to pound the rotted portion out of
the slot under the housing. The first one took about 45 minutes because I
wasnt sure if something else might be in the way. The second one only took
10 minutes of pounding.

My straps were 4 layers of 1 1/4" canvas. I plan on replacing them with 2
layers of
1 1/2" Nylon webbing. I went to the hardware store and bought black Nylon
webbing. From what I have read before in the archives, they are supposed to
be 22" long so that is my plan, unless someone has better advise.
