Mine did exactly the same thing. It was welded once, but a side-impact
bumper collision did it in. I welded a nut to the front of the strut and
use that. The old nut will eventually work itself down the strut and
(possibly) out the jacking tube. I suppose if you're real ambitious you
could get the nut back to the hole and "grab" it with a bumper bolt. Once
the bumper is on you wouldn't care whether it was welded on or not.

Upon the advice from a private e-mail, I called Nisonger Automotive, 1-914-381-1952 (New York), http://www.nisonger.com and ordered a set of "under-gauge rubbers" for US$9.95, $15 minimum order. They use tubing to seal under the chrome ring. Even though their website only mentions Smiths gauges, they do Jaeger gauges too.
