You could try using a "flexible claw" to get the old nut. I have one of
these and I use it quite often. It seems that my dexterity is not a good
as it was when I was younger and I keep dropping nuts, bolts, washers,
sockets, screwdrivers, ect. when I'm working on the car. They always
seem to fall into little crevaces? where I can't reach them, that's when
I bring in the CLAW! It hasn't failed me yet. You should be able to put
it through the hole where the nut should be and fish around for it then
pull it back up.
