Item Description:
This extraordinary, one of a kind, gimbal whale oil lamp was presented to the CEO of the ROOTES GROUP (australian division),by his friends at Rootes ltd,(makers of sunbeam cars, ect). The presentation reads;George Laird, from his friends at Rootes (aust)ltd,Dec 1959.We date the lamp 19th century we can't be sure,as the marks are either US,or Australian.Marked W.D.+Co, onthe base of the oil container, the leg, and the inside of the wick holder, with abreviationSTG.SIL.,(syterling silver). The length is 10.5 inches by 3.75 by 2.5 inches in width. measurement are approximate. The weighted reservoir pivots on the pins. The fox leg handle is real, but it is unknown if it was original. The item was purchased from George Laird grandson, who beleives that the handle may be attributable to the sport of the rich in his period, the fox hunt. From the host of Roote Group memorabilia collectors, to lamp enthousiasts, sterling buffs, too fox hunt memorablia collectors, this is an unparallelled find.!
Good luck.
