From the way you discribe the problem it sounds like the ignition switch
contact on the start side of the switch is going bad. I suggest putting a 12v
test light to the igniton switch side of the coil. Check the light with key
on, then check with the engine cranking. The light should dim a bit with the
engine cranking but should not go out if it does then try an ignition switch.
