It's done so that more oil gets to the timing chain.  I did it to mine
and I drilled out the little hole so even more could get in there.  Of
course my front seal is a modern rubber one, so I have no worries of
leakage.  But it is a common reliability/durability modification.  Oh
yeah, makes sure the little ball and spring inside of it have been
removed.
