One way to set the timing before you fire up your engine is this:
Remove #1 spark plug.
Rotate the engine until it comes up on the compression stroke for #1.
You can tell by putting your finger over the hole a when you feel air
blowing out AND the timing marks are aligned - this is top dead center
on the compression stroke.
You can check this out by looking to see that the rotor button is
pointing to the #1 plug wire in the distributor cap.
Turn the ignition on and slowly rotate the distributor back an forth.
When you hear the "pop" from the points opening you have set the
timing to zero degrees or what ever degrees you set with the timing
marks.
Let it "pop" several times to satisfy yourself of the location and
tighten the screw.
Put the spark plug back in.
Now you can fire it up and set it with a timing light if you like.
