I restored a '63 S3 back in 94/95 before I found all of the catalogs and
suppliers (not to mention this great site). I had to be a lot more
creative then than I would be now. The car was for my daughter's first car
and my target was the start of her Junior year (at) HS. About $400.00 into
the engine I hit the rock wall of not being able to find a set of bearings
and the start of school was looming. I bought a whole 1975 Datsun 210 from
a wrecking yard and plugged the engine and manual tranny from it into the
SIII. I know, I know. I'm not proud of it but it was an emergency
situation and it has made a very reliable and useable veh. The A-14
engine is pretty peppy and I don't think it feels that much different from a
previous Alpine I owned. The only modification necessary was a remote
oil filter since the orig. wanted to sit in the midst of the front
crossmember.

Of course I saved the original engine and trans. and have always intended to
replace it but have just not gotten around to it yet. In fact, since the
kid has since moved on to a newer car (no accounting for taste) I have
finally decided to sell the Alpine. So, if anyone is interested, I
couldn't think of a better group than this to offer it to. Contact me for
description.
