Trans numbers

Someone mentioned that there is a date on the side of their transmission.
There was some discussion about the manufacture date. I asked John Roseby
this very question a number of years ago. He said that the date that was
molded into the side of the transmission is simply the date the CASE was
molded, not when the transmission was assembled.

My guess is that the same information holds true for any numbers molded
into the side of the block.

How could they possibly know when a transmission is going to be built on
the day they are molding the case?

At a minimum, however, it does give you an earliest date. So, you would
know what earlier cars it did NOT come out of.

I guess if we knew what the delay was from case manufacture to assembly, we
would have a better idea. But even that would not answer the cases that
were just laying around for a year.
