According to the Factory Parts Manual the breakable plastic "U" thingy is
found on Series 3 cars from B9201955 to S4 and S5 cars. Series 1 and 2
models have a different assembly that may be what you had your hands around.

You had asked me to keep you informed about my search for 14" chrome wire
wheels. The 72 spoke, 14x6 wheel is too wide (rubs the upper ball joint) and
the wheel hub (snout) is a bit too long for the splined axle for safety. An
MGB 60 spoke 14x5 wheel will clear the suspension but the snout is the same
length as on the 14x6 wheel. I have made an arrangement through Sports and
Classics in Darien, CT to have Dayton Wire Wheel manufacture 72 spoke, 14x5
chrome wheels with the correct Sunbeam wheel hub and off-set. If you or
anyone on the list is interested in upgrading your wire wheels, you can call
Sports and Classics at (203) 655-8731 or 8732 and ask for Alex. The one-off
set price is $300/wheel, if others are interested in ordering a set I'm
confident that the price will come down closer to the price of the MGB
wheels. That's it for now.
