I am engaged in the r&r of the above.
SloMoIV(at)aol.com provided me with the following invaluable advice
"Since you've got the axles out, nows the perfect time to pull the gears
and
make sure the crown wheel bolts are tight.
These bolts DO loosen over time, as the soft washers underneath them
compress.
On the dozen or so rear ends I've taken apart, only 2 or 3 had all bolts
close to spec torque. Some bolts have been finger-tight. Once a few bolts
loosen, the crown wheel moves back and forth against the bolt shanks,
eventually cracking and breaking them.
Dick Sanders"
All the bolts on my crown wheel were loose.
The problem now is that from the wear & tear it is impossible to retorque
the bolts to the 50 ft lb spec. Does anyone suggestions short of replacing
the pinion and ring gear?
