All,
this morning at approximately 9am, after 8+ years of dormancy, my
1967 Sunbeam Alpine Series V roared to life. With the help and
guideance of my friend and Alpine expert, Jarrid Gross, we were able to
get the Alpine running strongly for about 50 minutes in order to break
in the cam, setup the carbs as best as possible and to set the timing.
The happy occasion was not without its disappointments, however. The
NOS water pump revealed a substantial leak and must replaced.
Fortunately I have an extra handy. And, much to my chagrin, there is
an oil leak from the #1 main crank bearing cap. So I will have to
remove the oil pan and timing cover in order to fix that. A rather
labor intensive prospect.
The Alpine set a milestone by moving under it's own power for the
first time since I began disassembling the car over 8 years ago. I
backed the Alpine into the garage, all of about 15 feet.
So I am very pleased that the engine runs and seems to do so quite
well. I 've still got to get the carbs squared away since we couldn't
really set them up properly due to a sticky linkage. Also, my tach
needs adjusting. Was able to adjust the valve lash after getting the
engine up to temp, and to retorque the head. I had to remove the valve
train anyway since one of the oil tee "O" rings failed.
Many thanks to Jarrid and his willingness to help. It is very much
appreciated. I hope to have the water pump replaced and the oil leak
fixed by the end of the day. If all goes well, I will be driving the
car in a few days. Yeah!
