overheating

A number of you have written lately about overheating which reminds
me of a story that happened to my brother when he owned my Alpine.
He and his girlfriend needed to run an errand so he announced "Let's
take the Alpine" to which she gave her usual response " NO, not the
Alpine!" ( He didn't have much luck at keeping it running reliably.) But
off they went along the cool shore of Lake Tahoe, enjoying the open air
until the Pine began overheating. (as it turns out ,due to a bad head
gasket) The water jugs in the trunk were empty so they white knuckled
it to the nearest gas station. She went to fill the empty jugs while he
lifted the hood and prepared to remove the radiator cap. He had no rag
to grip the hot radiator cap so he took off his shirt , wadded it up,
and with the engine still running reached for the cap. Apparently the
shirt wasn't wadded tight enough and the spinning six blade steel fan
snatched it from him and instantly transformed it into cotton shreds. It
looked like someone had thrown a chicken into the fan ,as bits of
feathery cotton floated on the warm summer air. He quickly shut the
engine down and spent the next fifteen minutes picking at and prying at
the strands of shirt that had wound themselves tightly around the fan
pulley. Meanwhile his girlfriend and the Alpine steamed.
If there is a moral to this story I guess it is that we Beamers will
give the shirt off our back to keep these wonderful cars running.
