Just to clarify, I used the other end of the chisel, not the sharp end. It
fit right in just like it was a big hex wrench.

I had a set of chisels that just happened to be hex shaped. One of them was
exactly the same size as a 1/2" hex wrench. The other option you could try
is to take a bolt with a head that fits in the hole and then take some of
that JB Weld stuff and permanently fasten a nut to the other end of the
bolt. That way you can use a regular wrench to just turn the nut.

Hi all,
My car is desperately in need of fresh oil- but how to get the plug out?
No store here carries a half-inch hex wrench, and the "big (3/8"-
couldn't find a 1/2") screwdriver and vice-grips" technique described in
the archive produced nothing. Do I need to move up to something more
specialized, such as a 1/2" (or bigger?) chisel? Any help would be
appreciated!
