What a day. After screwing around with my mechanical fuel pump for a few
hours I decided to give one of them fancy modern electrified ones a try.
That proved to be a futile effort. No matter what I tried it would not push
any gas out the other side. I know that it was going in because when I
pulled off the hose heading to the gas tank it proceeded to spray all over
the place. As I have proven in the past that I am an electical moron I will
ask a question worthy of that title. Does the fact that I am positive ground
factor into this (Well the car is positive ground. I am quickly becoming
pretty negative myself)? I just have this vision of all my little volt
things going around backwards in my car and getting all confused when they
got to the fuel pump. Anyway, I ditched the electrical gizmo and pulled
apart the mechanical pump and cleaned it all up, checked for leaks and put
it back in. The bubbles seemed to be bubbling a little less. Of course
bubbles seem to be notoriously sneaky. They hide until I'm about 1/2 mile
from my house then they stall the car.
So I put it all back together and started it up and....Hey! Now the dang
thing won't idle. After consulting a few beers and the shop manual I noticed
that no fuel was coming through the slow idle part of the carbs. I decided
to run some compressed air through the slow idle systems and that seemed to
make the front carb happy. The back one still is being stubborn and refuses
to play well with others. I noticed that I have a slight leak betwen the top
section of the carbs and the main body in the area of the bowl. Could this
tiny little leak cause the slow idle system to become-non funtional? For the
record I running twin Zeniths.
Thanks in advance,
Kurt
