Help!!! I am at wits end trying to make sense of how to set the timing
now that I have installed the Pertronix ignitor. The good news is that I
just raced the car around the block and it sounds and feels great.
           My concern is
that something may go awry   ( fouled plugs, burned
valves, overheating) if I don't have the timing set by the book.
I am using a timing strobe and trying to make
sense of the hash marks on the fan belt pulley. There is one giant gash
that I understand to be TDC and then a series of small lines that I
assume to be increments of 5 degrees BTDC. The book says I should be
somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 degrees BTDC but I can't get it any
closer than about 20-25 degrees at 1000 rpms and it seems to run great.
I fact it runs better than ever. No ping on hard acceleration,no missing
at idle. I have turned the distributor
counterclockwise as far as it seems to want to go and still cannot get
any closer than 4 or 5 hashmarks to TDC. Is the distributor supposed to
stop at a certain point or do I just need to put more muscle into it?
Or should I just give up and enjoy driving it?
