Gosh Rick,
I'd have left the 4.22 be in its own third member, and searched out
another that was either a 3.89 in good shape, or could be used as a core
for a new 3.89 gearset.
Particularly if the 4.22 was in the condition you say it was.
At least keep the old gears so you stand a chance of making a good 4.22
third member for the future.
The rear can whine for reasons other than the R&P being mis-shimmed.
Your bearings may have been marginal, or the bearing preload shims were
too loose or too tight.
