Firing order is 1,3,4,2.
Set the Crank pulley at top-dead-center (timing mark) and look at the rotor.  
Rotate the distributor to have #1 wire there.  If it still belches out of the 
carbs, move all of the plug wires 2 steps around the cap.  When you set it at 
TDC it is either #1 firing which is correct, or 360 degrees off: remember 
this is a four stroke engine which means you have to think of one cycle as 
720 degrees.
