Proper 'Piners,
Another option which I have done to my Drophead Coupe, is to rotate the
original gearbox 90 degrees so the shifting plate is on top and replaced
the side shifting mechanism with a top shifter from a Hillman Husky or
Commer Cob. It has a long lever that goes directly into the top of the
gearbox, not unlike the old American floor shifters. Bolts right on, no
modifications required.
Another option again, is to fit the shifting mechanism from a Series
Alpine to it after the 90 degree rotation. Bolts right on and works
flawlessly and this sets the nice short shifter back at your hand.
Modifications have to be made to the tunnel to accommodate the shifter.
Still another, there is a Castle side shift conversion that was available
at the time. Hard to find now.
I still have the column shift on two of the Sunbeam Talbots and if the
cable is adjusted properly, they work fine. Details for adjusting are in
the shop manual and it is not hard to understand the principle of how it works.
Later,
Bob
