I entirely agree with this assessment. Materials alone are likely to
cost $600 or more. I am afraid that the type of paint job you are
looking for and the amount of money you want to spend is a pipe dream.
Expect to pay more like $2000 for a quality paint job that involves
little or no body work, and that's on the low side.
There's a saying that's true more often than not, "You get what you pay
for." Perhaps you should rethink what your willing to spend. A good
paint job can really enhance the appearance of a car, not to mention
it's value. True show quality jobs run over $5000. I'm not certain
what you want, but for a thousand dollars you won't get anything near a
show quality job.
There are things you can do to lower the cost of the paint job. You
can strip all of the trim yourself in preparation for painting (i.e.,
remove windscreen, softop, bumpers, etc.). You can also strip the
paint off car yourself if it's a bare metal job. If not, you can sand
the car with 400 in preparation to receive new paint/primer. Ask any
prospective shop what they'll let you do to lower the cost (some will
not accept jobs where they don't do all the work).
Hope this helps.
