This is note quite true In Britain there is a 'Q' plate and there are no
I,O,U or Z plates

The Q plate is used for cars which have been written off by insurance
companies (usually bad crashes, rolls etc.) and then repaired for road use
or kit cars for which no year can be determined.

The system only ran in calender years until D then moved to an August 1st
to July 31st system so D was a short year Jan 1st to July 31st. This was
beacuse the system could not cope around new year which is a bank holiday.

The system started in 1963 with A so any Alpines registered before that
didn't get a registration letter ie mine is 1962 and is ASL 234, no seventh
digit.

1963 A
1964 B
1965 C
1966 D Jan - July
Aug 1966 E
Aug 1967 F
Aug 1968 G

The letter also used to be at the end of the plate i.e ABC 123 'B' and now
as we have been through once it is now at the start. current plates start
'T' 123 ABC

A lot of people here in Britian use privite plates i.e. buy ones with no
registration letter from previously scrapped cars to match initials and
hide the age of the car. I have a modern car with DJK 468 as the plate and
this is from 1998.

I must also stress that it was the period registered not manufactured and
this can be vastly different.

Hope this clears it up for any overseas Alpiners who wish to fit a british
plate for shows
