If you can't get them both, I'd go with the ser 5 engine, cause
parts like oil pumps, pistons, bearings, etc, are getting hard to source
for the earlier engine. But it might be worth taking the head
off and checking if the bores are badly worn, which may require
a cylinder sleeving job, and, as someone said, check for cracks in the block
near the alternator mount.
Remember that the 1592cc and 1725cc blocks were the same on iron headed
Rootes cars, so if someone local has a Singer/ Hillman/ Humber engine
for sale cheap, you can use that block as the basis for an Alpine rebuild.
And try and get all the flywheel & clutch bits, including the operating arm.
